Background

Google has crossed its five-year $1 billion investment target in Africa, one of the biggest technology investment milestones on the continent so far.

The Alphabet-owned company is growing its work in cloud computing, artificial intelligence and connectivity across the region as it looks to deepen ties with African markets.

At its first Africa Cloud Summit, held in Johannesburg, Google unveiled several new projects. These include expanded internet capacity, an AI lab in Ghana, and support for startup growth across African markets.

The summit gave the company a stage to lay out its next phase of investment on the continent and outline how these projects fit into its broader regional strategy.

Google is also building a connectivity hub in South Africa, meant to link Africa to Australia and India. The move aims to strengthen internet resilience across the region and cut reliance on existing routes, while giving more African markets faster and more stable access to global networks.

Alongside these infrastructure projects, Google rolled out a $1 million programme with Idris Elba’s Akuna Group to back African creators. The initiative targets 100,000 creators across the continent, giving them AI tools and digital skills training to help build their online presence and grow their work.

Together, the infrastructure work, AI development and creator support point to Google’s wider push to grow its presence in Africa’s digital economy, placing the continent within the company’s long-term global growth plans as it looks to build on the momentum from this milestone.
