Background-
Benin’s President Romuald Wadagni made his first official visit to France, meeting President Emmanuel Macron in Paris to discuss bilateral relations as France builds stronger economic ties across Africa.
Macron received Wadagni at the Élysée Palace during a dinner of the Africa-France Impact Coalition, which brought African and French business leaders together.
Macron described the relationship between the two countries as one of friendship, trust and ambition between equals. He said both sides want to create more opportunities for young people and strengthen future partnerships.
Wadagni won the presidential election with 94.27% of the vote, according to final results the Constitutional Court confirmed. He succeeded Patrice Talon, who completed two terms as president.
France is widening its Africa strategy around focused security, economic and business partnerships. Under Macron’s Africa Forward strategy, Paris announced €23 billion in investments in Africa, including €14 billion from French companies. The plan centers on co-investment, innovation, technology, youth and private-sector partnerships.
Benin offers France a strategic opportunity. The country sits on the Gulf of Guinea and shares an 809-kilometer border with Nigeria, along with borders with Niger and Burkina Faso. That position makes Benin a link between the Sahel and the Gulf of Guinea.
France says ties with Benin keep gaining momentum, spanning security, training, culture, education and infrastructure. Wadagni’s visit comes as Paris seeks new partnerships with countries such as Nigeria and Benin.
