Background-

Afreximbank has disbursed $975 million to finance a management buyout of Oryx Energies SA, placing one of Africa’s largest independent energy companies under majority African ownership for the first time.

The deal covers Oryx Energies SA, the holding company of Addax Energy SA. Afreximbank served as sole lender, facility agent, security trustee and escrow agent, which gave the management team the backing it needed to complete the purchase.

Oryx Energies has operated across Africa for more than 35 years. It supplies, stores and distributes petroleum products, LPG and lubricants, and offers bunkering services to customers in more than 20 countries.

Chief Executive Moussa Diao called the buyout an important milestone. He said the team will build on its strong base and grow its energy trading and infrastructure work across Africa.

Afreximbank President George Elombi said the deal advances the bank’s goal of transforming African economies. He said it will strengthen energy infrastructure, support local entrepreneurs, create jobs and keep more value from natural resources on the continent.

The financing adds to Afreximbank’s work in African energy, where it has backed upstream production, refining and infrastructure. The Cairo-based bank reported total assets and contingencies above $48.5 billion at the end of December 2025, with shareholder funds of $8.4 billion.
