Background-
President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead a South African delegation to Silicon Valley in the United States, where major tech companies will host the group. Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau confirmed the plan in an interview with SABC News.
Tau said the visit supports the country’s push to grow its technology industry. He said the delegation will focus on California and Silicon Valley as South Africa puts its digitalization strategy into action.
Digitalization sits at the heart of the country’s industrial development strategy, Tau said. He described it as one of three pillars that drive the agenda, and said the trip forms part of that wider effort.
The delegation will bring together government officials, business leaders and other stakeholders. Tau said the visit will create room for business-to-business talks and give the group a chance to learn from industry leaders in the United States.
The minister also said the lessons from the trip will shape the investment choices South Africa makes as it grows the tech sector. He said the country wants to anchor the sector as a core part of its growth path.
The mission signals South Africa’s intent to build stronger ties with global tech firms and speed up its digital development.
