Background
Japanese offshore engineering company MODEC has been selected to supply a mooring system for the Coral Norte floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project off the coast of Mozambique.
The project is being developed by Eni and its partners CNPC, ENH, XRG and KOGAS. MODEC will work with the Technip Energies JGC Joint Venture on the installation and integration of the system.
Coral Norte reached its final investment decision in late 2025. Construction is already progressing, with the vessel hull launched earlier this year at Samsung Heavy Industries’ shipyard in South Korea. The project is expected to start LNG production in 2028.
MODEC has been involved in the development from an early stage and is currently carrying out engineering and supply work. The company will provide the mooring system that keeps the FLNG vessel securely positioned while operating offshore.
The Coral Norte project is inspired by the Coral Sul FLNG project that is already producing liquefied natural gas in Mozambique. After completion of the Coral Norte project, there will be an added production capacity of 3.6 million tons of LNG per year.
This mooring system is meant to help the vessel adapt to the changing weather and varying climatic conditions in the Rovuma Basin area, and keep production running continuously.
This will boost the gas sector in Mozambique and improve Mozambique’s standing in the international LNG market.
