Background
Nigeria’s Bauchi State government and the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development have signed a financing deal backing the Bauchi State Transport Infrastructure Financing Programme.
The signing took place at EBID’s headquarters in Lomé, Togo, with Dr. George Agyekum Donkor, the bank’s President and Board Chairman, and Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, Bauchi State’s Executive Governor, putting their names to the agreement.
The deal commits EBID to US$91.63 million toward building 24 road and bridge projects across Bauchi State. Officials expect the programme to link urban and rural communities, widen access to markets and basic services, cut transport costs and strengthen agricultural and commercial supply chains.
The initiative fits within the Bauchi State Development Plan and Nigeria’s wider development goals. Planners anticipate roughly 5,000 jobs during construction, with 2,000 permanent positions following completion.
Donkor called the investment proof of EBID’s commitment to infrastructure that generates jobs, draws investment and raises living standards. Better transport links, he said, would lower logistics costs, widen market access and support regional integration.
Governor Mohammed called the partnership a key step toward a stronger, more competitive economy for the state, crediting EBID’s support with speeding up delivery of high-impact infrastructure projects.
The agreement reinforces EBID’s role as a regional development finance institution and partner to its member states, aligning with the Bank’s GRO Strategy to drive sustainable growth and resilience across West African economies.
