Background

The EDECS Group, which is a provider of EPC contracting services in the Middle East and Africa, has bagged a contract from DP World for revamping seven operating yards at Terminal 1 of Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam Port. Construction work is already underway on-site.

Under the scope of the project, EDECS will design and build seven cargo and material handling yards spanning a combined area of 90,000 square meters, along with associated gates and supporting utilities. Projects under the plan include infrastructure improvements, support systems for digital yard management, advanced cargo facilities, and engineering sustainability solutions. EDECS is planning to install an elaborate fire protection system as well as a high-mast lighting system throughout the whole port.

The Dar es Salaam Port handles over 90 percent of Tanzania’s international maritime trade, and it is the maritime gateway to seven landlocked countries in East and Central Africa. The port has surpassed 30 million tonnes in annual throughput, with Terminal 1 recording its highest-ever monthly container throughput of 46,582 TEUs in July, up from 13,779 TEUs in May 2024.

EDECS Chairman and Managing Director Hussein El Dessouky said the company’s teams are actively progressing works across the project’s key operational areas to support safer and more efficient port operations. DP World Dar es Salaam CEO Martin Jacob said the modernization effort remains central to improving trade connectivity across East and Central Africa, adding that the company recognized the pace of EDECS’ civil work execution.
