Background

Nigeria Customs Service has moved to establish regular structured engagement with the business community as part of efforts to reduce trade bottlenecks, improve cargo clearance, and strengthen economic relations between Nigeria and the United States.

Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, shared the plan during a quarterly meeting with the American Business Council held at the Customs headquarters in Abuja. He said the service aims to make stakeholder engagement a permanent feature of its operations to support smoother trade and investment flows.

Adeniyi explained that continuous dialogue between customs authorities and businesses would help identify operational challenges early and allow faster solutions. He added that the initiative forms part of wider reforms designed to modernise customs procedures and improve efficiency at ports and borders.

He highlighted several ongoing reforms, including the Advance Ruling system, the Authorised Economic Operator programme, Post Clearance Audit, scanning integration, and the B’Odogwu platform.

According to him, these initiatives are designed to improve transparency, reduce delays, and make cargo movement more predictable for traders.

The Customs chief also said improvements in cargo inspection and clearance processes are underway to reduce waiting time at ports and strengthen compliance systems. He noted that the reforms are aimed at creating a more stable and business-friendly environment for legitimate trade activities.

Members of the American Business Council welcomed the engagement and praised Customs for opening stronger channels of communication with the private sector. They urged the agency to continue addressing operational challenges quickly to boost investor confidence.

The council’s president, Nneka Enwereji, described the meeting as productive and said it reflects Customs’ commitment to improving the ease of doing business in Nigeria. She said closer collaboration between both sides would support stronger trade relations and economic growth.

The engagement reflects growing cooperation between Nigeria Customs and private sector stakeholders as both sides work to improve trade efficiency and strengthen international business ties, particularly with the United States.
